I am sitting on my messy bed as I right this post on a Saturday evening with a copy of the book harry potter half blood prince next to me. I was just a few minutes ago reminiscing all the fun memories I had with this book during lockdown.
the times I would read it during online class, early in the morning just after getting out of bed or during study breaks, just like with the rest of the harry potter books.
remembering how I thought I would hate this series and reading just to prove a point that I could get through this book. remembering I used to hate harry potter once upon a time and be frustrated when my friends or family would watch the movie during the weekends. I still bad for my young self who hated this magnificent piece of modern literature.
To be honest though, it was probably because everyone was watching the movies. I found the kiss between harry and Cho disgusting as a young child. I still do now slightly. it is cringe.
anyway I started to read harry potter when I was 12 during the lockdown. I loved the books and decided to rewatch all the movies. the first three were okayish but honestly after rewatching the movies I understand why I initially hated the harry potter series. cause the movies were trash. Unpopular opinion here:- movie adaptions of books are cringe and should be avoided at all cost. heck they should be banned!
Now coming back to harry potter I really loved the books and still do to this day. I even have a account on pottermore. Have'nt checked it in a while but I remember being sorted into Hufflepuff.
I really was happy. I really liked the house unlike many other potterheads. I also ship hinny and ronmione. Those two couples are my favorite. And I am also one of the few who have'nt probably read harry potter fanfic. I just don't like the idea of fanfic as a writer myself.
I really love harry potter. My favorite characters are Ginny Weasley and Luna Lovegood. And I would like to give a few reasons why I think all kids should read harry potter.
It is a really unique and wonderful story
Harry potter is a really unique story of a young orphaned wizard. while the story of magic and some aspects can be considered cliche, a lot of depiction of the various characters and the diversity in the storylines makes this story unique. One of the most unique aspect is that the male hero is a quite introvert character which is almost unheard of. The imperfections along with the original touches and extensive details of this magical world makes harry potter fascinating and a wonderful story for kids to ready.
It help develop kids imagination
The different unique elements and complexity of the world and characters leaves a lot of speculation that helps kids ponder and come up with theories that can further their creative thought and imagine. A lot of things are also unsaid or left to the reader speculation that leads to imaginations that can be good for kids in a world that generally discourages creativity and out of the box thinking. This helps kids also be more open minded.
It promotes diversity
Harry potter is one of the rare books with a range of characters with different experiences, backgrounds, ages and personality types being introduced through the course of the books. This makes it more likely for readers of different walks of lives and personality to find to a character to relate. It also helps that the complexity of characters help kids understand a lot about life and how it shapes people and look at things just black and white. Showing how people of different personalities can come together and be friends inspire kids to leave their comfort zone and talk to people different than them, hence promoting true diversity.
It promotes a lot of values that are genuinely good for adolescents today, especially teens
In today's day and age a lot of things that are popular among teens are usually what is promoted on social media which are shallow things like fame, popularity and money. Harry potter meanwhile shows that while money is important shows us the true important things which are family and relationships. We also see the main characters having their shortcomings including the hero of the story that can send the message to kids that while they are not perfect they can be the best version of themselves through self responsibility. things like loyalty, courage, kindnesses, being down to earth, modest personality and value of family is also personality along with things like working hard and self responsibility which are really important values in order to lead a successful life things which are not popular amongst today's teen. It also shows a plethora of healthy relationships unlike the arguably unhealthy relationships which are often glorified in popular teen books and movies today making it other way harry potter helps teenagers.
It can help develop a reading habit.
Harry potter books are really interesting and suck the readers into the world. A lot of kids have fall in love with harry potter literature and it may encourage to further read, reading statistically speaking has a positive impact on adolescents lives making it another way harry potter can be a positive thing for kids to consume.
It encourages questioning.
In harry potter, we often see the main characters question the world around them and stand up for their values and what is ethical. This can encourage young readers to do the same in real life and promote a sort of courage we rarely speak of in today's generation.
A lot of themes are directly reflective of real life
A lot of themes in harry potter like family, war, love can be held true to real life. this books gives us a lot of idea on how to deal with some of the most difficult real life situations and also helps us understand one of the key things to a happy life is not material things like so many in my generation think but is relationships, values and a clear purpose which often comes through having a family for most people.
It is truly female empowering.
Harry potter is truly empowering for females. It shows us a different plethora of females from traditional housewives like Molly weasley to career ambitious women like Hermione granger and showing that it is ok to want different kinds of lives as women. It also talks how we can exist peacefully with men in society and how the two sexes can have a balance, coming together which I would argue is the best kind of society for women to exist in.
These are just some of the reasons of reading harry potter. I can list hundreds or even thousands but it would be more of a book than a blog post so it will be better for me to stick with the top ones .
I would like to thank JK Rowling for creating a wonderful series that not only is a good source of entertainment for adolescents, it also teaches them important life lessons throughout the story which can help them change their life for the positive and potentially succeed.
I would like to end this post by giving advice to the people who have not read the harry potter books. Don't listen to others and give it a go. trust me it will change your life for the positive.
